All cavebright products are handcrafted from my home in Islington, London. My home is a cosy basement flat that is affectionately known as ‘the cave’ by those around me.

I’ve always had an interest in making things, even from a young age. I have become particularly drawn to using the casting technique for making items, with the creation of the moulds being an art of its own.

The first castings I did were in concrete and although I loved the surface finish, the high embodied carbon and the slow setting times encouraged me to look for an alternative material. My search led me to Jesmonite - a medium that ticked all the boxes for me. I’ve worked with different types of Jesmonite including both a water-based eco-resin, and an acrylic modified cementitious composite.

I use a variety of moulds to cast my pieces: some more regular moulds and others that I’ve spent a long time experimenting and developing myself. I purchased a pressure former which although occupies precious floor space in the cave, allows me to stretch the limits of what is possible for the shape of my finished products. I am currently finalising some new moulds I have designed, and once these have been used to make products, I will be uploading them to my website.

Every item I make is individually cast, cured, sanded and sealed by hand - a process which spans several days per piece.

Here’s a photo of me outside my cave.

No, not that huge thing. Just the little basement flat below it.
