Cavebright's beginnings were my home in Islington, London. My home is a cosy basement flat that is affectionately known as ‘the cave’ by those around me. I wanted to create objects to brighten my home. I began making Cavebright pieces in the cave, however I have now moved into a (much more spacious) dedicated maker space within Somerset House.
I’ve always had an interest in making things, even from a young age. I have become particularly drawn to using the casting technique for making items, with the creation of the moulds being an art of its own. I have continuously experimented with developing some of my moulds myself. Processes have involved 3d printing, pressure forming and refining for many iterations until I was happy.
The first castings I did were in concrete and although I loved the surface finish, the high embodied carbon and the slow setting times encouraged me to look for an alternative material. My search led me to Jesmonite - a medium that ticked all the boxes for me. I’ve worked with different types of Jesmonite including both a water-based eco-resin, and an acrylic modified cementitious composite.
Every item I make is individually cast, cured, sanded and sealed by hand - a process which spans several days per piece.
I hope my products will brighten your cave too!
